I have 3 short stories published, in 10 years.
But going into freelancing looks different.

For any who want to add paid&published to their credentials, short stories sent to near the bottom markets does work.
Shorts are favs of critique groups and betas, feedback is fast.
No agent needed to get published, and agents like a track record of paid publication. It shows that you meet the minimum for knowing how to write.
Shorts teach you to value ever word. Flash even more so.

it is absolutely validation and I need the money but also for me my mother wrote a story she actually didn’t finish the second one but I feel the greatest validation for me would be having her books published considering she died of cancer in 2011 that to me would be a dream come true

    Hello,
I have been writing short stories and poems since I was little. I have wanted to be a writer since I was in kindergarten and I am not prepared to give up that dream. I got one short story published in a high school (well, gymnasium I am from the Czech Republic not and we have a different educational system but at that age) magazine and well, I think that back then I was most charmed by the illustrations done by the redactors (i.e. my friends running the whole thing). Even if I know I am a writer because I write, I also want to be able to say to my Grandma “See? I managed this.” These days I make a living by translating, but I won’t lie, it is hard with so many cancelled scientific conferences and with closed bookshops the opportunities are few and far between.

I am hoping to retire in another 4 years. I am working on building a part-time to full-time career of writing. I will probably never stop writing or working until I cannot anymore. Writing is one of my passions. Making an income through freelance writing would be a dream come true.

    Hello Ian,
I’m 80 now, and have a million books, screenplays, and articles – fiction and non-fiction, across many genres – that I need to get out there while I still can! I’m presently writing a non-fiction book on the symbolic language and science of the misnamed “right brain”, that defines the causes and offers solutions to the global crises now unfolding because of our unsustainability.

It seems as though a writer needs to have a ‘presence’ for publishers to start paying attention to a ‘new’ author.
So, a wider writing experience appears to be a pre-requisite.
    But, where/how to start?
A chance to sharpen the craft, to gain direction and purpose.
Looking forward to this stepping stone towards publication.
And, if a little extra cash is available en route, well… that’s not a bad thing, is it?

Times are tough, it’s true. The known names are the sellers. Just keep on keeping on. That’s what i am doing. I think I am going to make a collection of the oh-so-sweet rejection letters and compose a book. Wish I’d thought of this a while ago.

Thank you for the opportunity. It will boost my writing career which I’m intending to launch professionally. I have never had a paid writing job before now. I would like to learn the nitty-gritty of writing and getting paid for your writing. I would be glad if there can be tips on how to embed ads in your blog (no matter the app used in designing it) and how to earn money as a blogger. I appreciate the free one month training as well. I look forward to the webinar.

First of all, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Ian and Jacob for their efforts and time to help freelancers throughout the world. I DO understand that it is not an easy task to even read these comments. I’ve been a teacher of English for over nine years and due to this [COVID 19] virus, I’ve lost almost all means of income as institutions, schools and colleges still remain closed. I’ve been a freelance writer for some time but never have I been paid for that. It’s my dream to stay home and be a freelancer, writing. However, as I hail from Sri Lanka, a country, where opportunities are fewer compared to others, I find it extremely difficult to open doors for me to flourish as a writer. I’ve written an essay book which was a self -published one and I’m currently in the process of writing a novella. But I have no idea on how to publish it. Yes at this time, money has been a massive factor as well. I’m looking forward to the webinar on Friday.

    Hello, Ian!

Let me just say its a pleasure and thank you for this opportunity.

I’m smiling as I’m reading your question. ‘why would someone want to get their first paid publication?’. Call me naive, but I think everyone who loves to write in some form or another, deep down fantasizes of writing professionally, sitting at home on their computers or tablets or, yes, even an old typewriter that barely prints the letters anymore from the worn out tape. The thought of being my own boss, no traffic commutes, no fighting for parking spaces, none of that, seems like a dream come true to me. Yes, I’d imagine a meeting with a client here or there, if and when this COVID business is done, but even then, the idea of working at home, or at the park, or camping, or where ever I might be other than the day-to-day office, sounds very inviting, Besides, I believe that to be able to express their feelings, knowledge, wants and fantasies to all those that are willing to listen, is the greatest reward any writer can have. I, sir, am one of those writers who wants to be able to express all the above and get paid for it. I love to write in many genre’s, including, but certainly not limited to, a quick poetic description of a tree or a 280 page YA novel manuscript that I have recently completely my 2nd draft. I love to write about anything and everything: people, traveling, motorcycles and concerts, it doesn’t matter. If I have a subject, I’ll find the words. So, with a little training, I’m looking forward to opening a new door in my life and turning my love for writing as a hobby into a freelance writing business prospect.

Thank you, and I look forward to the opportunity of participating in the webinar.

    -Susan

I’m an amateur nonfiction writer willing to receive a paid publication. This is because it would recognise me as a established writer, gaining professional experience parallelly. This would further capacitate me with funds to write further without any financial backdrop.

I discover myself as an amateur writer very recently and I do write poetry and short stories. As I am from India, my stories are generally focused on issues and life from India. I want to write a novel and get that published. Money is a big constrain for me here. I want to develop this side of mine. Looking forward to the webinar.
